Max Allen Collins: Collins wrote a series of novels that follow various famous golden-age mystery writers through a murder investigation entangled in major historical events of the ’30s and ’40s. For example, we have Agatha Christie crime solving during the London blitz, Earl Derr Biggers investigating a murder in the middle of the Pearl Harbor attack, and Leslie Charteris up to his cumberbund in murder and espionage in an “explosive” The Hindendburg Murders. In addition, Shadow creator Walter Gibson “knows” Nazi fifth columnists and radio programmers are up to no good, while Orson Welles works his magic to help unravel the perfidy in The War of the Worlds Murders.
