Frank and Marion Cockerell – The only mystery that I have read by them is Dark Waters, which later became a moody Merle Oberon movie. The plot is a decent variation of is she nuts or are her mysterious family trying to drive her that route? The characters are fairly interesting. There’s a clever contemporary twist of the heroine suffering what we now call post traumatic stress disorder, as a survivor of a U-boat attack on the ship carrying her. Some of the Louisiana atmosphere works well. Still, the novel lacks the dreamy, brooding nature of the film’s direction under André de Toth.
